This is a tough task! We're working now to select a good DIY marina in the Hampton, VA (or Hampton Roads) area. The winter time is the perfect time for our desired maintenance requirements, so we're going to visit two good options shortly and decide which one is right for us.
We're already designed a little spreadsheet for our jobs. We broke them up into parent and child jobs, marked when they would be completed (or if one item depends on the completion of the other), then tried to estimate the parts and labor costs. This is important, because we don't want to overpay for the work we're trying to get done either.
Finally, since I can be a bit of a pessimist where a shipyard is concerned, we anticipate adding 25% of the cost to whatever I estimate.
Hopefully this search will go well for us, since we have a lot of big items to take care of. We're looking to remove and rebuild the Yanmar 2GM20, clean out the entire engine room, do some rewiring, get a bottom paint job, replace one thru hull, retire another thru hull, and rerig the swing keel properly.
